Ally Centre of Cape Breton

Welcome to the Ally Centre of Cape Breton’s website!

christine porterMy name is Christine Porter (Chris) and I have been with this organization for the past 22 years, the last 17 of which I have been the Executive Director. It is an honor to serve our vulnerable population. I have been humbled on many occasions as I listen and learn from them. I believe that stigma is one of the most significant causes of health inequities and I am committed to continuing to work on reducing stigma and establishing programs and services that improve the health of this population and our community.

I am thankful for the support of our funders, our community partners, our Board of Directors and for the coveted trust and involvement of the people we serve as we strive to meet the harm reduction needs of Cape Bretoners.

Please drop in and check out what we have to offer and meet the friendly staff and volunteers. I am always up for a good chat and more than happy to show people around and educate on our services.

Cheers,
Chris

Our Mission and Mandate

The Ally Centre of Cape Breton is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to prevent the spread of blood borne pathogens in the community and to create a supportive environment for those infected and/or affected by blood borne pathogens.

In pursuit of this, the Ally Centre uses a community development and harm reduction approach in providing services, education, support and advocacy on blood borne pathogens and related issues for the people of Cape Breton Island.

Providing Prevention and Support Services Around Blood Borne Pathogens for Over 30 Years in Cape Breton.

The Ally Centre of Cape Breton is dedicated to preventing the spread of HIV and Hepatitis C in the community and supporting those that have been infected and/or affected by these blood borne pathogens. We take a community development approach by providing education, support and advocacy services to the people of Cape Breton Island.

Listen to Janet Bickerton's new song "Can't You Help Me"

This song, "Can't You Help Me", is telling two stories.
The repeated plea for help that seems to fall on deaf ears even though those in dire need are standing right in front of us. It speaks to our inability to see ourselves in others.. the ways we put distance between us.

And the story of those on the ground, trying to help - coming up against the fear and apathy of the system and sometimes our own neighbors. It asks us to reach for the best in us.. that we have what it takes.
